What is the Alberta Lottery Fund?

  • Government's share of net gaming revenue from VLTs, slot machines and ticket lotteries is placed in the Alberta Lottery Fund.

How is the Alberta Lottery Fund Administered?

  • The Alberta Lottery Fund is separate from all other government revenue.
  • Use of lottery dollars is transparent, allowing Albertans to know how lottery dollars are spent.

Alberta Lottery Fund Initiatives

  • Thousands of volunteer, public and community-based initiatives are funded annually.
  • Examples: community facilities, libraries, museums, sports and athletic events, agricultural societies, major exhibitions, arts and culture groups, wildlife and conservation projects, public athletic facilities, seniors' groups, recreation, and historical resources.
  • Types of public initiatives funded include transportation projects, water management infrastructure, school renewal and construction, post-secondary facilities, and health care facility construction.

Alberta Lottery Fund Revenue Distribution (2009/2010 Estimates)

Lottery fund dollars are distributed through allocations to specific ministries, and through those ministries to foundations and grant programs. Lottery funds are committed to initiatives administered through 13 ministries.
